Rewrite rules in httpd.conf or .htaccess?

which version is "better" ? is the httpd.conf version realy faster for all configurations?
will it save serverload?

Moving the rewrite rules from .htaccess to httpd.conf will improve apache performance (serverload will be decreased).

Note that this improvement is only noticeable in very big, or overloaded servers. Most users don't need to take this route.
