    Question RC7 and Customer Information

    Hi,

I have 2 very simple question.

    1) What happened to vBSEO RC7 ? Is it going to be released ?

    2) It seems we have to provide details about us. What if we don't have business ? What if i'm not running a board for business ?

    Thanks

Yea, i was a bit reluctant to fill in that information to download the file that I paid for

Why do we have to fill out information about ourselves?

In that case, just enter the name of your forum. For the role, you can place "owner", "admin", "webmaster" of whatever is most applicable.

We need to maintain our customer information. In the very near future this will be used for an automated invoicing system.

I'm reluctant to provide the profile information until I see the vBSEO privacy policy.

This is more information than vBulletin requires.

vBulletin asked for your phone number, address and your email address.

Agreed, that's far too much personal information to provide..

I don't see why it's required and I want to know how that data intends to be used, stored, shared with, etc..

There should be a privacy policy in place and active before requiring that sort of information..

I have to say that I am strictly negative about this whole customer profile thing. The only time when disclosing your address and telephone number can be justified is when you purchase something which has to be delivered physically. I can also understand why payment processors such as PayPal would need my private information, but Jelsoft? Crawlability? Please. If you are trying to make yourself look more 'serious' by requiring detailed information, think again. I haven't seen one positive comment about this decision yet. Not to mention that you want us to submit all our details over an unencrypted protocol. For something as serious as this, a valid SSL certificate is a must.

    Good point.

I'm also not sure it's a good idea having it integrated into vBulletin as some sort of profile option.. a separate system like the affiliate thing might be a more appropriate place for it.

While I can understand the concerns that you guys have, did you realise that nearly 100% of the information we are asking for, is also required by Jelsoft when purchasing or renewing a licence?

It's also not done over a secure connection.

    Code:

as I said, SSL is a must. I never gave Jelsoft my real details

PS: No offence, but I'd also say that it is a tad early to be comparing Crawlability and Jelsoft. That's like comparing Google and Jelsoft.

vBulletin is a long running and well established company though. As much as I like vbseo, you guys are not. At least not comparatively.

There's no privacy policy or information about what will be done with this information or why you actually need more than our name and payment information.

Phone number I can understand, but physical address? For what..

Until that's posted I have no intention of providing the information, and I doubt many other will either.

Lastly, considering we've already paid for the software and updates, it should not be required to access the download area.. At least not until concerns are addressed and fixed.

Way I see it? Sure, you will use it for your billing system; but what good at all does it do to us the customers other than continue downloading for something we've already legally paid for? None what so ever. There is no incentive for us customers at all, and no valid reason that we should be providing such information.

Also, for the record, Jelsoft does NOT have my information on file. I bought my first license second hand, so they contacted me about the license transfer to confirm that I am aware of it, and created an account for me. No information asked. The most information they have on me is my email address and my full name. and I am even on vBulletin's official Chinese team; see official Chinese website's forum leaders (site seems to be inaccessible right now, check from archive.org or wait for it to come online).

I have nothing other than personal preference to privacy to not give you guys the information. I see no privacy statement; you've not been around as long as Jelsoft or PayPal; and you've got no SSL; there is no reason what so ever for me to have to fill out the form at all.

Justify the need, provide a secure channel, and give us ease of mind that our information are safe, then maybe people won't react so much about it. But until then, I know I won't be filling it out.

Oh, and for the record, I'm also not impressed to see the other thread I replied in got closed down with a VERY unsupportive answer... It makes it look as if you are trying to not disclose information that you have planned against us; even though I'm sure it is just an administrative gesture in hope to prevent further questioning...
