Question on the "remove whitespace" setting

I want to give that setting a try to see if it speeds things up, but there is a warning regarding the setting. Does this program permanently alter the code, or does it just alter what is sent to the browser?

In other words, if for some reason this messes things up, will everything go back to normal if I turn it off?
