Moving .htaccess content to httpd.conf surely increases processing. If you are using WHM you can check [How-to] Move .htaccess rules into httpd.conf from WHM - vBulletin SEO Forums

I've been watching my apache processes gobble up resources a lot lately. Every little way I can find to get that load down will help.
You should consider ditching out apache and use nginx. I'm making tests on my test installation with nginx and it is crazy fast compared to apache.
