Moving .htaccess to httpd.conf - speed increase?

Has anyone experienced a speed increase after moving their .htaccess file to httpd.conf?

I've been watching my apache processes gobble up resources a lot lately. Every little way I can find to get that load down will help.

You should consider ditching out apache and use nginx. I'm making tests on my test installation with nginx and it is crazy fast compared to apache.
