Importance of Meta Keywords & Description on vBSEO enabled forum

Hello all SEO experts,

When I setup our forum almost 5 years ago, I was little aware of Meta Keywords and Description. I've been using vBSEO and our traffic grows every day!

Someone on the forum recommended that proper use of Meta Keywords & Description is very essential from SEO perspective.

I wish to know,whether Meta Keywords and Description (the option available in vBulletin Settings -> General Settings) is relevant or not. If yes, will it be a wise decision to update it now (that our forum is 5 years old)? Or will it cause our rank to drop?

Meta tags aren't what they used to be. Search engines are simply 'smarter' now. Back in the day, the first search engines where 'meta crawlers', and hence the importance of keywords,etc. While they are still used, it's the main body text that counts more than anything.

the vb option is for the homepage only. These should be concise about your site.
vbseo replaces keywords and descriptions dynamically on threads and forums for better placements.

So as I interpret this, I shouldn't bother about it and even if I update it, it won't affect the forums. Please confirm.

Brian wants to say there won't be that big effect as you probably think. And you shouldn't care about it very much, because vBSEO already replaces the meta titles/descriptions.

Correct, Since you are using vBSEO then don't worry about it because vBSEO replaces keywords and descriptions dynamically, For example there's a thread with this title : vBSEO Forums so vBSEO will replace this thread keywords as "vbseo, forums" So vBSEO already done this part
