Does the patch mentioned here work?

Should we just copy over the existing file?

thats not a patch, thats "full" stable release

and yes, just download new 3.8 from members area and replace old files and after that update your forum

Yes if you are planning to upgrade to vBulletin 3.7.5 or 3.8.0 you should apply the patch.

What does the patch do? And what are the consequences of upgrading but not applying this patch?

You may apply the patch manually if you prefer:

It's a really simple fix, but it breaks basic functionality throughout the platform, that's why everyone must apply the patch (simply replace vbseo.php from the download location) or do the file edit described above while upgrading to vB 3.8.
