Question Google sending people to old threads - help?

    Hi,

I have a forum that specializes in dance music events. Some events are yearly and generate alot of traffic.

Unfortunately Google continues to send traffic to old threads.

    For example.

This is the new thread: News: Sensation 2009 New Years Eve - Insane Events Australia - Dance Music, Events and Nightlife

But traffic is still being sent to some of the older threads here:

Sensation White Melbourne New Years Eve NYE - Insane Events Australia - Dance Music, Events and Nightlife

Should i prune the old threads? If so how will that affect my SEO?

    Thanks,
    Josh

You might have more links on the old resources that help them our rank the newer ones for particular terms.

You could consider redirecting (Custom Redirects in vBSEO) the older threads to the new versions (if there is a limited # of them).

This is a fairly constant issue for me. Since mine is a site that specializes in dance music events. Often the events will generate traffic and inbound links. Then the event is over. When the same event is run the following year, Google directs people to the previous years event.

Any ideas on a strategy to handle this?

You can try to use the vBulletin "notices" feature. Put up a notice targeting that particular sub-forum and link to the current as well as latest event threads from that notice. Or if your event threads are not confined to a specific sub-forum, you can just edit the first post of the old event thread linking it to the new thread.
