I am using Xcache with vbseo.
What else can I do to improve this?

This is directly related to your server's processing ability. vBSEO adds a pre-processing layer to re-build vb pages as they are called, and that takes server cycles.

I see, seems slower and slower, when i disable it my site, links everything loads super fast.
Wish I can find an option to make it much faster...other than having to move to a dedicated machine from VPS.

Looks like my web host was running xdebug to optimise my server configuration, that's why it was running so slow.
Now everything is fine, but we are still working on improve first byte time.

Things to consider to improve load times:
    Lower forums on forumdisplay
    less posts per page
Using IDs in all urls where possible
Optimizing and/or repairing DB tables on a semi-regular basis

These may not be advisable to change for other reasons.

Brian, I am running on a VPS quad core xeon, 2.4ghz. I would think the machine would be powerful enough to process.
I've had my web host optimizing my vps for the last week or so but still minor improvements here and there :/

Here is what my host said: "I understand vbseo takes server cycles but if resources were an issue wouldn't the load go up as a result? Right now the server runs with plenty capacity left for scaling and other tasks. Why wouldn't vbseo complete faster then? Is there any chance this could be explained by the vbseo guys?"

BTW @ Mert, we have been optimizing the server for days now, and just hasn't improved when it comes down to vbseo.

Now my webhost would like to ask to see if there is anything vbseo guys can recommend as far as server optimization goes to improve performance other than what Brian posted above, I've done all of those.

Brian, that post was made back in 2007, not sure how some of the stuff there is relevant with vbseo 3.6 and vb 4.1.x.
I can certainly ask the web host company to check out this:
"Move rewrite rules from .htaccess to httpd.conf

For users with dedicated servers, the vBSEO rewrite rules applied in the .htaccess files can be moved directly into the httpd.conf file for more efficient performance."

I did disabled the linkbacks options.

    Question,
If I change url rewrite settings > advanced settings > [forum_title] to [forum_id] wouldn't that be bad for SEO?

BTW My host is doing some of this (server side) for me.
They have few questions about optimization.

Regarding vbseo .htaccess rule, what are the repercussions of moving these to an Apache config file? Will vbseo attempt to re-write them to the .htaccess file?
Another question, do you know where we can get the IonCube version of vbseo.php?

We do not recommend changing url formats, ever. The forum urls are likely .00001 of a second in your load query and should most likely be ignored. (you have what, 50 forums, or less, on average.. it's not a big table to sort).

vbseo doesn't write any htacess files. once moved the htaccess file should simply be deleted. all changes should then be made directly to the apache file and apache restarted each time. You will need to leave allowoverride on so that the other htaccess files (like in the sitemap, and writable folders) still function, or move those as well.

vbseo is no longer encrypted. the red heading denotes that ioncube vs zend is an antiquated topic.
