If you untick the box highlighted in the image below then that should work, I think this is what you mean anyway.

You could also disable the "Add Titles to External Links" option in the vBSEO control panel.

Well as far as I understand it, all it does is take the title from the page. The link still exists and I don't see a huge downside to it (other than the fact that you have less information about the link) but I know nothing of the SEO impact it could have.

But isn't that what you were trying to accomplish?

The downside to it is not against you--- it's against the linked site.

Google uses anchor text from linkbacks as strong keywords. as a basic example, a link like SEARCH ENGINE will give more weight to a google user searching for "search engine" than "http://searchengine.com" as the anchor text.

I personally feel it's a user feature more than anything. Grabbing the title of the page often either encourages a click out, or lets the user know to ignore it as its of no interest to them.

I seem to have it disabled in the vBSEO control panel and it still does it.

And I absolutely hate this. There's nothing more annoying than something like [How to] Setup www.yourdomain.com or yourdomain.com (www vs. non-www) - With .htaccess 301 redirects in the middle of your paragraph/post.

You need to disable Add Titles to External Links within vBSEO Cp. Once it is disabled , it will not retrieve the titles.

Make sure your config_vbseo.php file is chmod 666 before you save your settings.

I beleive it is NOT retro active. If you disable it, it will be disabled for new posts going forward.

If you want to address old posts, you will need to run the vb maintence tool to rebuild post cache.

I actually made a mistake in one of my posts above. It -did- disable it for off-site links. However, it still does it for links that are on my site. I guess that's not so bad.

The option right above external links should stop thread titles appearing.
