    Question Changing Domain name

    Hi all,
i have buyed a new domain, i want to change my actual.
I want to add a redirect from the old links to the new one,
    for example,
in any google searcher click on a this search result:
    www.mydomain.com/forums/thisthread

i would that it will be redirect in the same thread but in the new domain:
    www.mynewdomain.com/forums/thisthread

    Is possible to do this?

Will be any problem with seo mod_rewrite rules?

Please help me, i don't want to lose 5 months of perfect indicizations.

Updating your domain name will definitely have impact on your search positioning, even if you have the 301 in place.

However, if you wish to do so, please open a support ticket for help with the 301 redirect code and to update your license.

    Thanks joe for the reply.
But after some times, the new domain with seo re-take the actual percentage of indicization?

I have need to change my domain, the actual is not good, because have a "number", 1 "-" and it is to hard for remember .
I want to change only for this.

It will recover over time. The 301 redirect is setup to tell Google that you have re-located. You just have to be prepared for some impact in the short-term.

I understand it is a difficult decision, especially if you already have a good traffic level.

I looked up your domain. It's cool how short it is. Too bad you could not also get the version without the dash.

However, I can see that your site could benefit from some rebranding, so I guess your domain change is the first step.

Yes, thanks for this reply , seo at the moment will indicize to my domain a good traffic rank..... for this, if i will apply a more simple forum name this traffic will increase more.

The newone will be sfwupgrade , the domain name and the forum name will be "SoftwareUpgrade" .
Simply to remember and not have a dash

Thanks again for your reply , i will open a critique request for others tips.

    A OT question :
But when i change the domain name , is necessary to make a database dump, restore it and connect on the new domain? (The server will be the same).
Please help, my new domain in some hours will be propagated.

If the new domain name is already pointing at your public_html folder, then you should only have to update the vbulletin url in your admincp.

    Well, thanks,
and for the htaccess file , the new one that i will put on the old domain:
    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.domain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

will replace the main htaccess , that's correct?

Correct. That will go on the old domains root, and vbseo's will go on the new domain name.

    Well, thanks.

    But i'm not sure.....
my host suggest me to add a parked domain and reading the help info:
For example: If you have the domain: mydomain.com and you also wish to use the domain yourdomain.com and wish for them both to go to mydomain.com, you'll need to use a parked domain. Once the parked domain is added, both mydomain.com and yourdomain.com will go to mydomain.com
Unlike a subdomain, a parked domain has to registered with a domain registrar. You will need to ensure that you list the proper nameservers for the parked domain with the domain registrar as well. Please note that your hosting plan may have a limited number, or no parked domains available. Check the Stats/Info tab to see how many parked domains you currently have available.
Unlike a subdomain or addon domain, there will be no new directory created when you created a parked domain because it goes to your /public_html/ directory.
I have understand the my domain will be the same and the new domain will be a second domain.

There's any differences from the first main domain and the second parked domain?
    Sincerely i'm crazing.

That should work. What is the contents of your .htaccess file after you park it?

I will said this when my new domain will be propagated , i think that the registrant have got a forward problems, are 4 days that i'm waiting this propagation but if i make a whois is again on the initial site....i have change the dns forward ip, i have parked the domain but still not propagated :(
I don't know why all this problems.

    P.S.
After propagation, i will replace the main main domain with the new one, in this mode if any body surf the new domain link, will go on the new domain page, and again if anybody surf on the old domain will go on the new domain page and with 301 seo redirect i don't lose the page's indicizations.

Hope that this propagation will make faster

This is the content of my .htaccess after the propagation of the new domain without editing:

    Code:
    # Comment the following line (add '#' at the beginning)
    # to disable mod_rewrite functions.
    # Please note: you still need to disable the hack in
    # the vBSEO control panel to stop url rewrites.
    RewriteEngine On

    # Some servers require the Rewritebase directive to be
    # enabled (remove '#' at the beginning to activate)
    # Please note: when enabled, you must include the path
    # to your root vB folder (i.e. RewriteBase /forums/)
    #RewriteBase /

    #RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.yourdomain\.com
    #RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yourdomain.com/forums/$1 [L,R=301]

    RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(admincp/|modcp/|cron)
    RewriteRule ^((archive/)?(.*\.php(/.*)?)?)$ vbseo.php [L,QSA]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(admincp|modcp|clientscript|cpstyles|images)/
    RewriteRule ^(.+)$ vbseo.php [L,QSA]
Now, i will upload the 301 redirect .htaccess on the old forums directory

    Thanks at all.

    Hi,
i have chenged the domain name, only the domain name,
but if i try to replace the htaccess with the 301 redirect on the old domain webserver (that's it the same webserver of the new domain) will be replace the newone too.
I have only replace the domain but the 2 domains , the old and the new, point on the same public_html folder, for example if i delete a files on the web server with the old login, the same files will be deleted on the new domain too.

There's any alternative for don't lose the seo's work? For don't lose all the indicitated pages?

    thanks
