Change Version number to Match VB version

Ok, this might seem a little petty. But I think the VBSEO version number should be changed to align with the Vbulletin product. It just makes more sense. It's not like VBSEO works with any other product and needs some special version or product life tracking.

    Vbulletin Version 3.70 should = VBSEO 3.7

or while in beta should = VBSEO 3.7RC5, etc

and future versions/updates would be = VBSEO 3.7x, etc

I've noticed a trend at vbulletin.org with the mods to take on this naming convention and it makes much more sense in my opinion.

Simpler, cleaner, communicates appropriate product and version numbers without any additional thought or questions.

    Not at all.

    they are two different softwares.

    vbseo version 3.1 works with 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7.

    what would you do then?

    it doesn't make sense

vb.org is HARDLY a role model of 'good coding practices'. In fact, most of it is 'what not to do'.

briansol, what's wrong with vbulletin.org? I wouldn't say it is 'what not to do'. It's great, and people actually do help.

the vast majority of the code on that site i'd never let touch my database.

it's great that there's mods to have, but most are poorly coded by a kid in moms basement, not software engineers.

Well, I agree, yes -- but some respect has to go towards them for there dedication. Afterall, everyone has to start somewhere...

    rightfully so...

but at the same time, using them as a role model for good coding practice, which my my original point, is probably not the best thing to do

Agreed. But, IMO -- users can simply try an hack/mod on a test board, and if it doesn't function correctly, or have sql vulnerabilities, ect. then simply don't install it on your live board!

Don't know if you use the IpbProarcade -- but that has security issues. It can be easily hacked. Don't know if the full vulnerability has been fixed, only time will tell. It was actually Phillip (creator of esselbach cms system) who fixed it previously.

I'm actually developing HelpCenter now, just released the lite version. Pro version on the way. Maybe vBSEO want to look into it? (Only messing hehe).

It's really not as complicated as you make it seem.

VBSEO version 3.6 (compatible with all versions of Vbulletin including 3.7)

VBSEO version 3.7 (compatible with all versions of Vbulletin)

Obviously I can't speak for VBSEO but presumably by the time Vbulletin launches a new release which is supposed to be 4.0, VBSEO will also have a new version of their software. If VBSEO comes out with a new version before that, it could be simply named 3.7x

To me a correlating number just seems more logical. VBSEO only works with Vbulletin so in my opinion the version numbers should closely correlate, It really wasn't meant to be a big deal, just a suggestion which would likely help out new customers.

I agree on some of your points about VB.org, I could have used a better example but since it was vb related i found it interesting that many of the current mods/hacks were starting to use a 3.7x nomenclature.

Edit: To further support my case for changing the version number, check out this post by brianSol: Query/Suggestion for vBSEO , where there was confusion over the version number

Also, I just realized that I accidently posted in the wrong forum, this was meant to be in the VBSEO suggestions and not the sitemap suggestions, could a mod please move this thread to it's intended home: http://www.vbseo.com/f10/

    Thanks,
    Jason

This would completely go against the whole reason we use version numbers

vbseo is in it's 3rd major version, 2nd revision.. or something like that..

You don't change a version number just to match another product..lol

    more info
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning

In principle, in subsequent releases, the major number is increased when there are significant jumps in functionality, the minor number is incremented when only minor features or significant fixes have been added, and the revision number is incremented when minor bugs are fixed.

Well no, that was a comprehension issue/typo (vB vs vBSEO), not a confusion over vBSEO versioning.

    Thread moved.

and, Brandon's post and link to wikipedia basically spell it out.
