    Can't change rewrite rules??

It appears that after running with a particular set of rewrite rules that you can not change them, from a practical point of view.

It would seem that over time, there would be more and more links in posts to another thread or post These links are of course the rewriten ones. Using a a new naming system breaks all those links.

In fact, it sort means that you can never disable seo either.

Or is there a way out of this catch-22?

As long as you have the ThreadID in your Thread URL format, there are .htaccess rules you can use if you were to ever stop using vBSEO.

Thank you for the quick response.

I think vBSEO is a great product and I don't have desire to get rid of it at all. But this question came up from 2 different points of view. The first was that I really made my URLs way too long and want to change them to something much simpler, but without breaking the old links.

The second need is more pressing. I have been chasing a performance problem(s) on my website. Part of that process is disabling the various plugins and measuring the impact overall and then add them back one at a time and try to see which ones may be slowing down the system.

But I couldn't do that because of the link breakage issue. Could you point me in the right direction for the rewrite rules so I can turn off vBSEO.

Thank you very much for your help

If you were using the standard Thread URL format, this rule should work for you. (Adjust the path on the right accordingly.)

    RewriteRule ^[^/]+/([0-9]+)-.+.html$ /forums/showthread.php?t=$1 [L,R=301]
