Playing With Ad Placement... Feedback plz! :)

So I'm playing around with ad placement. I decided to try the two large block ad's (see Am I on Google? - Recognized Expert) to see if I couldn't start monetizing a little better on my non registered viewers.

I would rather not show ad's to members, but I may end up showing a small banner. What do you guys think of the current placement for guests?

Side Note: I'm using notices at the moment to insert the code... I'm starting to think that was a bad idea as I can't seem to remove the ad's from my forum list.

I would love any and all feedback on ad placement ideas. Until then I'm going to continue culling through these old posts...

I guess placing 2 blocks on top is not allowed on google, read about this on some places adsense publishers have received emails from adsense to either add a border to same or remove 1 adblock and place content on left or right of same.

Brian posted something on here about the big block adverts and they do work rather well. I'm having some of the best returns I have had all year since doing it.

If your worried about showing adverts to your members, you can wrap code round them so only guests see them.

Quote:
<if condition="$bbuserinfo[userid]==0">

<!--
adsense code here
. -->

</if>
I also use a hack that only displays the choice of one skin to non members, so adverts are only run on the one skin.

What use are guests if they are only viewing your forum?
Earn some money out of them and give them the option to register and see no adverts.

heh, wow, that is an incredibly successful ad spot! I'm bummed out that I have been missing out on those clicks for so long :(

I'm going to play with a boarder though, hopefully it will help w/ click through.

Quick side note: On one of the sites WordPress blogs I replaced the 250x250 ad block with the 336x280 ad block and it was over 300% more successful. I'm seeing an unheard of 10% click through. Too bad the ad's are worth squat. lol (Link: 1. Introduction to Blogger | Blogger Video Training)

double post...

How important is overall Page CTR?

Would it be better to scrap the totally unsuccessful ad's to bring up the CTR average for my adsense account or is that pointless?

Brian Kindly explained how adsence boxes work
horribly low earnings :(

Through his advice, I killed every advert on my forum except for two google advert boxes just below the navbar. My own earnings have gone up by about 1/3 each day and some. If I ever meet Brian, I owe the guy a drink and non of that poxy light beer you guys drink

The way I look at it, guest are just that, they take up bandwidth and produce nothing else in return. Earn a few dollars from them

I saw that post but never pieced together that that was the answer I was looking for

I am going to kill any ad's below the fold... they all seem to fail miserably for me too:(

Thank you for the response Lee!

Don't thank me. Brian's the one who deserves all the credit.
He does give a lot of good sound advice and one more that one occasion has taken the time to explain things in a way that your average idiot living in the sun can understand.

If you want to run different adverts for members to see, you can wrap code round those as well.

Quote:
<if condition="!is_member_of($bbuserinfo, 1, 8, 9, 10)">

Adsence code here

</if>
That way you give big adverts for non members and another type for members
