I have always used alt tags and have kept them in place for my sites, even when most people were saying they were dead. They may have been less relevent to a degree with search engines like Google, but I was always under the impression that some of the other search engines still took alt tags into account and even though Google is the big one, it is still possible to pick up visitors from the various other places round the net and I do like the whole thing about not putting all my eggs into one basket.
