Danny Sullivan Blogs on Changes to Adwords Relevance

Google Adwords Advertisers Need to Use Exact Match to Get Exposure for less "Commercial" Keyword Phases

Danny discusses how Google Adwords is trying to improve ad relevancy for web searchers.

The impact will be less for terms identified as "commercial". However, advertisers targeting terms not identified as commercial (using broadmatch) will see a difference:

Less of their ads will be displayed.

For effected advertisers, they will have to rely more on identifying the right keyword phrase to target using exact match.

The overall number of Google Adwords will not be changed.

Impact to AdSense Publishers
  • No specific mention is made of AdSense. However, one might assume that the AdSense ads placed on publisher websites would be also be affected.
Notes on vBSEO
  • SEO is only one component of SEM (Search Engine Marketing). Many forum admins have a full SEM strategic in place to boost their organic search results as well as drive traffic to their websites using AdWords or other Cost-Per-Click (CPC) advertising channels.
  • CPC and SEO work well together for new forums. CPC helps drive paid traffic to the site.

Once these visitors get started posting, they begin developing the content that will later get indexed in the engines and start driving traffic from the organic search results.

  • SEO is the most cost effective method of SEM. vBSEO replaces the need for expensive SEO consulting and is highly cost effective, with many forums seeing an immediate to short-term ROI.
For Discussion
  • Do you create posts on your site with specific keywords included in order to "attract" AdSense ads that are more likely to encourage clickthroughs by your members?
  • What other AdSense strategies do you use?
  • Do you use any special AdWords advertising techniques to drive traffic to you forum, and convert members better?
