Support for canonical links?

Google (microsoft and yahoo) just posted regarding the support of a canonical link format:

Carpe diem on any duplicate content worries: we now support a format that allows you to publicly specify your preferred version of a URL. If your site has identical or vastly similar content that's accessible through multiple URLs, this format provides you with more control over the URL returned in search results. It also helps to make sure that properties such as link popularity are consolidated to your preferred version.

Seems that something like this be useful for VBSeo.

It's nice to see Google adding this option, a nice step in the right direction. Of course, vBSEO has always been canonical! That is a large part of what link consensus is all about.

However, vBSEO's link consensus has the advantage of being embedded at the "application level", not "META level". More than just declaring the canonical URL on duplicate content pages, we ensure that only canonicals (1 URL per resource) exist to begin with.

Therefore, vBSEO's link consensus provides true canonicalization at application level, leading directly to greater crawling efficiency, optimized external links, and maximized link value assignment.

So it won't be implemented in PR3?

We'll include it since it is going to become a new standard. We want to have that covered as well.

As a vBSEO user, with link consensus, there is absolutely no urgency for you to apply the canonicalization META. vBSEO users were not vulnerable to this.

For vBSEO users, I would recommend waiting for vBSEO 3.3.0 GOLD. There is no sense taking any risk with another plugin.

For non-vBSEO users interested in the canonicalization method, you could consider this plugin. However, if you are serious about optimizing your forum, you really should go all the way and get maxed out with vBSEO.
