I was annoyed by the way Vbulletin changed their licensing so drastically, but they managed to win my confidence back (for the moment)

I have un installed vbseo now and got vb4 up and running i used this rule forum-name/threadid-threadname.html and all of my forum threads are OK but i still have lots more broken (links as below) this is where i found my ticket support has ended so i hope some one can help.

How do you uninstall VBSeo when upgrading it completely crashes your site and you can't access your vbulletin control panel?

I highly doubt that the majority of vBulletin users are going to abandon ship for IP Board. That's like predicting people will abandon Porsches for raising the price and will go to Hyundais instead.

I get that there are disgruntled vBulletin license holders. I don't like the way it was all sprung on us either, and I don't like the way forum license holders were offered discounts for the full Suite but only a token discount for the core foum upgrade.

I don't like it when taxes are raised, either. That doesn't mean I'm about to give up my citizenship and move to Iran.

I doubt it, probably some sort of contract that stipulates a no no for competitors
Besides, there is plenty of PHP based Freeware boards that are equally as good. I am leaning more toward these then paying for garbage anymore

Log into the vBulletin Control Panel.

Go to "Styles & Templates" > "Style Manager" and select "Edit Templates".

Select "Forum Home Templates" and then "FORUMHOME" and make the following Find & Replace changes:

Find:
• "<!-- what's going on box -->"
Replace With:
• "<!--VBSEO_VIRTUAL_HTML-->"
• "<!-- what's going on box -->"

Find:
• "<!-- end what's going on box -->"
Replace With:
• "<!-- end what's going on box -->"
• "<!--/VBSEO_VIRTUAL_HTML-->"

Remember to "Save" your changes.

There are a few easier ways to do it, using yum, since you can add certain repositories, and this gets installed faster.

Granted Woopra doesnt do that, ok the live demo helped me understand your point alot better, the real unique value that I see is the to do list really, in a hurry login, go "brainlessly" to the to do, click on blog entry for the top, knock out the blog entry, feel good that you progressed your SEO fo the day and go back to stumbling...be nice as you select candidates for the to do list if you could mark them as priority, then you could have an express button that goes immediately to a priority post interface, or am I the only one in that big a hurry lol. Why no wordpress or vBulletin function though?

One of the many things HitTail does that is not immediately obvious is that it only shows you the first time any given keyword from any given source ever led to you, then starts using those as filters against all future searches.

The upside is that you're not looking at the same old data over and over, and it's really easy to zero in on what is new and important. It's part of what makes the suggestions issued by HitTail so effective.

The way the vBulletin blog is at the moment, I do not think it is worth a single penny! It is lacking features, and it just looks so outdated. Wordpress is free, and a lot, lot better - it can also be integrated with vBulletin as there is a thread over @ vbulletin.org explaining how to do this.

If you want a nicely integrated blog, it does the job very well. :)

That's an excellent observation. Basically, keyword variations that are *related* to your main keywords used in your link building campaign may be better able to rank.

And that's really a fundamental principle in how people should build out there niche content. Start with the core thematic ideas, and branch out to more specific related topics/keywords.

The is a little bit like building a "guided long tail". A little planning goes a long way, and the effect cascades into the quality of the user generated content that follows.

In most cases, I find the best approach is to target around a 50% mix of your top keywords and keyphrases. Inbound links with the anchor "apples" will still help the page rank for "red apples" as well... even if the competition is too stiff to reasonably reach near the top of the first page it's still helpful for other key phrases containing "apples." A reasonably good mix of various key terms to the homepage / inner pages is the most natural way to obtain and maintain strong serps, so as you say most webmasters neglect the long tail but even though the single keyword rankings may be out of reach targetting them can have a flowing effect on all pages of the site for long terms containing that keyword as well. That's my experience anyways.

I have to disagree. Forums have always been a social network, regardless of the new features. These new features will help a site, as they get other people interacting more. The only downside is, there maybe more posts going into 'visitor messages' than the forums.

I hate the bloat too. One day they'll look around and realize no one with large forums uses their software because the performance blows.

i opted to use permalinks only for the same reasons you talked about: i don't think the showpost page added much for seo, and for using the forums, having the info in the context of the thread almost always was more helpful than a single post anyway...

Nice idea if you use the showpost page, i've set mine up to not use it and just use the permalinks so its no longer possible to link to single posts and it seemed to help lower the bounce rate a few percentage points

thanks for the suggestions. i hadn't looked at a script approach, because the original content is too inconsistent, having been gathered over years. but i could well either consider some outsourcing or see if some of my mods or members would help.

Maybe you can get a programmer to write a script that auto-formats the recipes for the new system, or outsource the cleanup work to a freelancer.

On the paid subs, I plan on keeping the content available for free. The main point of the site is to offer support for members and visitors, and I don't want to lose track of the core mission of the site.

So right now, I'd only remove the ads for subscribers. But I'd like to offer them other things as well, once I figure out what. I am fortunate in that I have a pretty loyal core memberbase that I believe would be willing to help support the site if the price was affordable for them. The site was all but dead for a few years with the expection of the forums because the previous owner had moved on to other things. The core members have repeatedly expressed their appreication for my taking over and the work I do on the site.

Ironically, since redoing the site and adding new content, my bounce rate is down-along with my adsense! More people are staying, so less people are clicking out.

On the recipes, I imported them from an old, home-brew system the site founder set up into drupal's recipe mod, and the import process is sloppy. So each one requires me to go in, move the ingredients to the individual ingredients spaces, put the nutritional info in the right place, etc. The final product is much better than the old version, they can change quantities on it, and allows me to set it up so later on, I can do a search so people can find recipes by ingredients on hand, how many net carbs limit, whatever. It would have been easier to just pull them in like articles, but for long term, I'll have better quality and more flexible content. I'm just paying the price with the work now.

I've tried to take the long-term view at every opportunity with the site, and focus on quality and scalability, but that decision has meant that in many cases, a LOT more work for me. That's ok, 'cause I'm looking at the long haul, but I still gripe about the work...

I like your approach here. Although I always advocate getting rid of showpost pages by replacing their links with permalinks (option in vbseocp.php), IF you're going to keep them, it is a great idea to do further optimization of the page.
